   Alaçatı, one of the great wind surf areas, is a magnificent place to learn wind surf even if you don't know swimming and to visit between April and November.   Alaçatı which was a marsh before has gradually become a wind surf paradise since the order of the grand vizier of the time in 1850ies to dry the marsh. The marsh was dried by opening a channel reaching to the natural harbor in south of Alaçatı and providing drainage with huge ditches.

The channel opened became a harbor which ships draw into. Greek workers were brought for the constructions which Hacı Memiş Ağa,one of the leading architects of the time, directed. The workers coming settled in 1km north away from the Alaçatı Natural Harbor building today's Alaçatı. Because Greeks have no fields to cultivate, Turks having large fields gave them their territory to cultivate for a while. Greeks with working premises also ameliorated viniculture. Today, wine is sent everywhere in the world from the factory in the harbor. 60years till the outbreak of Balkan War in 1914 were heyday of Alaçatı. With the exchange in 1924, Alaçatı became a village where immigrants from Kosovo, Bosnia and Salonika were placed thereby the immigrants contributed to tobacco business in Alaçatı.

Raising tobacco, melon and stock breeding are the components carrying Alaçatı to 1980ies. In the course of time, the work of tradesman, partially fishery and tourism took the place of agriculture. Alaçatı also has rich thermal sources. These sources beneficial to human health are known good for illnesses of skeleton system and bone.
